U11A Netball to the IAPS Small Schools National Championships

27 Feb 2018

This tournament was held at Framlingham Prep and attracted 20 entries this year. The Witham girls once again found themselves in a very competitive section, the toughest, with two teams from this section, finishing in the top four. This seemed to be history repeating itself!

The girls made an impressive start against a very strong team from St George’s and although going down twice, on both occasions they fought back to draw the match 4-4, even having two chances to go ahead in the dying moments! Lilia, Matilda and Bunny had an excellent game really putting in masses of leg-work to keep possession.

The next match was a different story with some very indifferent play on show – the timing seemed to have gone, along with any sense of urgency. Goals were missed. Fortunately, the girls managed to put this game behind them putting in two great performances over the next two games winning against Framlingham B, where Isabelle made some good interceptions, and playing impressive netball against Barrow Hills. Rose and Mollie did well in this game against a strong, tall attack making good interceptions and Charlotte was very accurate at the other end converting most of the team’s opportunities.

Good scoring totals from Millie and Charlotte meant that the girls went through in the second place to the quarterfinals of the Cup Competition. Another impressive display saw them victors against The Down’s, Malvern. Then for some reason the design of the tournament saw us once again against St George’s in the semis. At full time, the score was 2-2, but after a panicky extra 10 seconds of surprising additional play, somehow we were 2-3 down and not in the final! The girls really tried to get their heads up in the 3rd/4th play-off and were up at half time against a solid team from Holmwood House, but their heads went down in the second half and they came out 4th overall with a 2-3 loss. Such bad luck! Your dignity and resilience in a difficult situation were a credit to Witham – you should be proud of yourselves girls! A special well done to Millie who stood in at GA having not played it all term! And please remember, St George’s won the final 10-1!
