The Sun Shines on U9 Rounders!

U9s to Barlborough Festival

All the Under 9 girls travelled to Barlborough for their annual festival. The first match was against Westbourne, with both teams evenly matched, both teams struggling to connect with the ball and most of the scores coming from mistakes in the field. The game finished in a draw. The second match was against a year 3 team from St Peter’s and St Paul’s which resulted in a convincing win by the Witham girls. Witham then played two matches against the Barlborough A team. By this time the Witham girls had ‘got their eye in’ and scored some very good rounders from strong hits into the field, meaning that they won both matches by three rounders. This was an excellent performance from all the girls.

U9A v Stoneygate U9A

Witham – 10
Stoneygate – 3

The U9A team travelled to Stoneygate on a lovely sunny afternoon alongside three Witham cricket teams. The girls had a shaky start in bat with some errant running resulting in four of our batters getting out on their first go! Stoneygate’s bowler struggled a little to begin with, and gave away two full rounders; Katie and Scarlett both scored half rounders, and Matilda one and a half. Witham’s fielding was much more efficient and impressive, with some particularly good calling and teamwork from Imogen. Rosie did a great job in the bowling box and Stoneygate only scored half a rounder.

In the second innings Witham were much more focused with the bat, with Georgia, Rosie, Katie and Imogen all scoring full rounders thanks to some big hits and clever running. The Year 3 girls in the team certainly held their own and picked up the rules quickly. Stoneygate had a more successful second batting innings as their top two batters scored four half rounders between them, topped up by half for no balls. It was a great game and fantastic to see such a high standard so early in the term.

U9 v Stamford Junior School

Witham A – 14 ½
SJS A – 4 ½

The Witham U9A team had a convincing win against Stamford’s U9A team. The whole team played well and despite a couple of teething problems in the field to start with, the girls really impressed with their problem solving and some great batting.

Witham Mix – 9

SJS – 2

This was a newly-selected Witham team who certainly hadn’t had the opportunity to practise together as a team. They overcame this issue though, working hard and concentrating really well throughout the game. The Year 3 and 4 girls showed great teamwork and a good skill level.

U9B v Stamford U9B

Witham – 4
Stamford JS - 1 ½

Some of the U9/8 girls had their first matches of the season v Stamford JS last Thursday. Against the U9B side, the Witham girls held their nerve and played sensibly, with Scarlett bowling consistently and Samantha doing very well at backstop.  Eloise caught safely on second base, stopping the Stamford batting attack except for one very strong hit. The Witham scorers were Samantha, Flora W, Scarlett and Jessica H.

Witham Mix v Stamford

Witham – 5 ½
Stamford JS - 0

In the second game Witham mixed up the teams and Maddie M was the notable player for her superb work on second base, both with stumpings out and a catch. Chiara bowled consistently well and the team were alert in the field. Katie, Chiara, Maddie, Millie, Olivia and Georgia all scored. Well done girls!
