Witham 1st XI Finish in Style After Tough Trip to IAPS Nationals!
12 Dec 2014
IAPS National Hockey Finals
The girls travelled down to Queenswood for the National Hockey Finals on Tuesday with the knowledge they were up against the best schools in the country. Witham were overwhelmed in their first fixture against Danes Hill and lost in the last thirty seconds against St Faith’s. In the third match, Witham showed real spirit and drew one a piece after a last gasp smash home from a short corner by Felicity Bridges Webb who was a warrior all afternoon. With nothing to lose, the girls played their hearts out against Greshams in their last fixture but another late goal dashed hopes of their first win. It was an invaluable experience for the girls and one I know they well take a huge amount from. The standard of hockey, as expected, was breath taking but Witham left with the knowledge they thoroughly deserved to be there in that company. Well done girls! Thank you to all the parents for their continued support – especially the picnic!
Witham Hall 3 (Sophia Ktori x 1, Felicity Bridges Webb x 1 & Anya Batty x 1)
Tired from the previous few days of hockey, the girls were still raring to go against Oundle. Witham pressed from the start and passed the ball well but too many errors gave Oundle free run in the midfield. Once the girls found their feet, opportunities came thick and fast with Sophia Ktori once again causing havoc down the right. Her cross found Anya Batty who coolly slotted home. It wasn’t long before the second with Felicity Bridges Webb bundling in a loose ball from the top of the ‘D’. Oundle sat back in the second half which meant space for the Witham attack was limited but Sophia found some space in the area and rocketed her finish to the near post. Oundle had chances towards the end but strong defensive work from Catherine Swanston, Poppy Chatterton and Lottie Bingham kept them at bay along with Isabella Manara working particularly hard in the centre of midfield. Well done girls on another good win.
Spratton Hall 2
Witham Hall 4 (Sophia Ktori, Felicity Bridges Webb, Catherine Swanston, Philippa Hix)
Witham Hall travelled to Spratton on a brisk sunny day, ready to play their second eleven-a-side game of the season. The girls started brightly and surged forward scoring two quick goals. Sophia Ktori and Felicity Bridges Webb slotted home after fine work down the flanks. After half time, Witham continued their hard work with Catherine Swanston scoring a fine solo goal and Philippa Hix slotting in at the far post. Despite losing concentration and conceding two sloppy goals, the girls held out to remain victors.
Stamford School 0
Witham Hall 2 (Sophia Ktori, Felicity Bridges Webb)
On a freezing Wednesday night, Witham travelled to Stamford and started the match well. It took a while for Witham to take the ascendancy with Felicity Bridges Webb smashing home a short corner. The focus was on the performance rather than the result and Witham passed the ball well with Isabella Manara demonstrating what a promising talent she is in the centre of the pitch. Harriet Darley battled well and provided possession to counter attack with Sophia Ktori taking the game out of Stamford’s reach. The match finished 2-0.
Oakham School 0
Witham Hall 3 (Sophia Ktori, Hattie Grace, Isabella Manara)
The Witham girls were thoroughly fired up for their last match of the season and produced some of the best hockey I have seen from a Witham team. Passing the ball with composure, the whole team worked their socks off with Hattie Grace setting the tone with a thundering strike after superb work by the entire team – a real team goal! Shortly after, Sophia Ktori played a neat pass and exchange with Felicity Bridges Webb and poked the ball home. Witham pressed hard with Lottie Bingham showing some clever hockey but the score remained the same until half time. In the second period, Philippa Hix revelled in the extra space and caused the defence endless problems. Catherine Swanston was a rock at the back with the ever present Poppy Chatterton. Mid-way through the second half Witham scored their third after neat play down the right, Isabella Manara topping off a superb display with a tidy finish and the girls went on to win 3-0. It was a simply brilliant display of hockey far beyond their years and each player showed real heart. Well done girls on an unforgettable season! Thank you to Oakham for hosting us and to all the parents on the side-line showing their support as always.
