Life at Witham
High standards of teaching, coupled with positive attitudes to learning, results in pupils achieving very good standards in all aspects of their education. The foundations are laid in the Pre-Prep Department; where there are approximately 90 children aged 4 to 8. Children enter Reception aged 4 for full-time education. Within small classes, the best of traditional and modern teaching methods combine to provide a stimulating learning experience. An extensive range of subjects is taught by the Class Teacher, who is supported with generous ancillary help. There are specialist teachers for Music, French and PE, and a superb, contemporary learning area greatly adds to the many outdoor experiences.
The Prep Department contains 160 pupils between the ages of 8 and 13. The preferred aged of entry to the Prep Department is 8, though later entries can always be considered. Children from the Pre-Prep Department will normally pass in to the Prep Department automatically. Boys and girls are prepared for entry at 13+ to public school. The extensive use of specialist teachers ensures high academic standards and the timetable encourages all children to experience art, music, drama and sport at the highest levels. The Learning Support Department offers valuable help to children requiring additional support. Witham has a highly impressive record of children progressing to the school of their choice, and many gain scholarships.
New buildings, which house state -of- the art equipment, sit happily alongside the main house, and a full size Astroturf pitch adds to the superb sporting facilities that include a squash court, nine hole golf course, tennis and netball courts, extensive well tended grass pitches and a sports hall. Team games have a high priority and provide opportunities for all abilities. The impressive Stimson Hall provides a wonderful venue for the school bands and choirs, whether performing en masse or in smaller ensembles, and for the range of class, assembly or school drama that take place. Here, and across the School, the walls and classrooms reveal a wonderful array of paintings, drawings and sculptures that bare testimony to the children’s imaginative and inspirational work within art.
The latest edition to the impressive facilities is the superb Science and Resources Centre, featuring two new laboratories, a new Modern Languages suite and a Library and resource area.
Boarding at Witham is recognised as a happy and highly rewarding experience and made popular by the weekly and flexi-boarding options that are available; many pupils from the age of 8 enjoy the special atmosphere this brings. A comprehensive team of resident staff, sensitive to the needs of the children, create a ‘home from home’ environment that significantly adds to a Witham education.
The school day is further enriched by a programme of activities and clubs, ensuring that recreational interests are well catered for. It is often at this time that untapped interests are developed, unthinkable talents discovered, or untried theories tested. This programme extends across both the pre-prep and prep departments, offering additional flexibility for parents at the end of the school day.
