Year 1 is taught by Mrs. Kay with support from Miss. Ilic and Mrs Burill. In Year 1 the children develop their English, Maths, Science and social skills and apply these to focused activities. All other subjects are delivered within our topic work. This ensures that there are still close links with Reception and the children continue to enjoy experiences across all the EYFS areas of learning whilst accessing the National Curriculum. As always, fun and enjoyment across the curriculum are paramount but a great deal of emphasis is placed upon each child becoming an autonomous learner.
Topics are planned in a two-year cycle and always around the children’s interests and learning needs. An example topic is Space. Within this topic children cover History and Geography in a meaningful way, learning when, why and how space travel began and discovering fascinating facts about the planets. To encourage speaking and listening skills, children are encouraged to bring in show and tell items, related to the topic, from home to share with their peers. All creative work, which includes displays, D and T and Art, is centred around the space theme.
As in other year groups, specialist teachers take the children for Physical Education, Games, Music and Languages.
Besides the curriculum, the clubs available to children in Year 1 are Yoga, Ballet and Short Tennis. There are also opportunities for individual music lessons for a variety of instruments.
