Year 1 are taught by Mrs Kay and Mr Blake with support from Miss Ilic and Mrs Burrill. In Year 1 the children develop their English, maths, science and social skills and begin to apply these to focused activities. All other subjects are delivered within our topic work. This ensures that there are still close links with Reception and the children continue to enjoy experiences across all the EYFS areas of learning whilst accessing the National Curriculum. As always, fun and enjoyment across the curriculum are paramount but a great deal of emphasis is placed upon each child becoming an autonomous learner.
Topics are planned in a two-year cycle and always around the children’s interests and learning needs. An example topic would be ‘Space’. Within this topic children would learn when, why and how space travel began as well as discovering fascinating facts about the planets. Other key subjects, such as computing, are embraced and explored within the topic. To encourage speaking and listening skills, children are encouraged to bring in show and tell items, related to the topic, from home to share with their peers. All creative work, which includes displays, D and T and Art, are centred around the space theme as well.
As in other year groups, Physical Education, Games, Music and Languages are taught by specialist teachers.
In addition to the curriculum, the clubs available to children in Year 1 are Yoga, Ballet and Short Tennis. There are also opportunities for individual music lessons for a variety of instruments.
